For a better societyCommunication has been regarded as art since the time of Aristotle as what Quebral mentioned in her primer. Communication has been the driving force of Development as it is the vehicle to carry out information and knowledge. At first, Communication for Development and Development Communication was confusing, but through the articles, it enlightened me and made me comprehend them better. Development communication and Communication for development are 2 different things but work together to help society be better. Though there is no significant definition of development, Quebral and Chatterjee articles defined development in an economist way of thinking, and Servaes on the other hand, defined it as a social change.
Servaes states that development or social change should equate with “empowerment” to influence the wider system and take control of their lives. This is an essential action for those who are suppressed and underprivileged. To give mindfulness and impactful change towards social justness, the individuals who should be heard must be given the appropriate way to convey their thoughts and actions with regards to the betterment of the society. With that, Development Communication should be done collectively rather than individually to make things better for everyone. It enables people of social classes and various cultures to have access to information and communication to help perceive critical issues and seek action. Chatterjee talks about communication as not just about giving information and awareness, but also about understanding the behavior and barriers to change or adopting new practices. From our social science class, it was talked about that there should be productive actions from the understanding so meaningful changes can happen that lead to improvement.
Communication for development on the other hand, is a two-way communication system between the development worker and various stakeholders that pave way for discourse and cooperation between them. It is initiated from the connection of individuals bringing about social relations, and the utilization of frameworks put into the context of each discussion held by individuals. It starts with the initiative to achieve social change as it involves the process of utilizing different kinds of media and interpersonal channels to look for mutual understanding and dynamic cooperation within interactions. Thus, it is a need that communication strategies are utilized appropriately in order to listen to those whom we want to empower.
Communication is fundamental to development from numerous points of view. For instance, it enables organizers in distinguishing and formulating development programs. This consults with individuals to take into account and consider their needs, attitudes and perspectives, and traditional knowledge. Only with communication will the undertaking beneficiaries become the principal and vital actors to make development programs effective. Any development program that views individuals as simple beneficiaries, instead of as the genuine makers of change and progress, typically fails. Consulting the individuals and effectively including them in making the decisions enables them to perceive significant issues, discover common justification for action, and fabricate a sense of character and participation in decisions. These influence them which essentially brings the program’s prosperity and success.
In viable terms, effective planning must put forth a deliberate effort to figure out what individuals need to do, can do, and can keep on doing sustainably. To find this out, communication techniques go a long way past the simple question-and-answer survey. Meaningful and significant discussions, produced by people trained in interpersonal communication skills, and varying media tools, such as video or radio, can assist the community with distinguishing its actual issues and needs. It also determines where its capacities and necessities lie. This self-analysis can assist the society with producing sensible proposals for new development initiatives and improve development projects strategies on different approaches. Overall, this can also see the different perspectives in the community that can help evaluate and understand the underlying issues within the community.
